Indian Temple Architecture: Form and Transformation
Published in Hardcover by South Asia Books (01 March, 1995)
Author: Adam Hardy
Average review score:

An academic source book, not an art book
I've always been fascinated by ancient Indian temples, so I ordered this book assuming that it would be a coffee-table/art book filled with large beautiful pictures with some descriptive text spattered about here and there. It turns out that it was not a coffee-table book at all, but instead is academic textbook for serious architectural study. Instead of the beautiful color pictures I was expecting, the book contains many pictures (black and white unfortunately) and hand-drawings of details after details. Just the shear number and detail of the hand-drawings is quite impressive. One annoyance is that all the text is in the front and pictures in the back, so you will have to keep flipping back and forth. In summary, the book was not for me (a reader with a casual interest in temple architecture), but probably is an excellent source for the academic architect requiring an in-depth study of the subject.

Hardy Boys in California!
The Hardys track down a man that disappeared three years ago after being accused of stealing a valuable racehorse. This is just your average Hardy Boys book with plenty of fast-paced action.

The Mummy Case (Hardy Boys, No 63)
Published in Paperback by Pocket Books (January, 1988)
Author: Franklin W. Dixon
Average review score:

Really 3.5 Stars
Frank and Joe are asked to safeguard an Egyptian mummy being transported from a New York museum to Egypt and to locate five valuable Egyptian statuettes stolen from the museum. Also, Mr. Hardy asks the boys help in stopping a gang of rebels on a small Mediterranean island nation. This book was action packed and fans of the volumes currently produced would probably love this book; however, fans who liked the volumes of the original series, when Frank and Joe primarily stayed in and around Bayport, will find this book too modern for their liking and probably won't enjoy it as much.

Nowhere to Run (Hardy Boys Casefiles, No 27)
Published in Paperback by Simon Pulse (May, 1989)
Author: Franklin W. Dixon

Hardy Boys Walk on Wild Side
An entertaining Hardy Boy book for one simple reason: they finally shed the goody-goody image. Taking the case of Bob Conway, a ne'er-do-well biker accused of hijacking, against their father's commands, the Hardys soon find themselves on the wrong side of the law, because Comway had recently escaped from jail. In this casefile, the brothers find themselves up against a ruthless motorcycle gang and a desperate bounty hunter. The Hardy's attempt to clear a man's name is a good lesson in friendship. Even though every one seemed to be against Conway, the Hardy Boys stood up for him. The book did, however, miss some opportunities for more exciting action. The mere fact that the Hardys were on the wrong side of the law makes this a must-read.

Open Season (Hardy Boys Casefiles, No 59)

Skiing in the Rockies
This is an average Hardy Boys book. Plenty of action, a wounded woman, and someone that tried to kill her.

Ornamental Grasses (Hardy Plant Series)
Published in Hardcover by Christopher Helm Pub Ltd (January, 1990)
Author: Roger Grounds
Average review score:

Good book on grasses with excellent illustrations.
This book offers a fine overview on grasses and is particulaly strong in the range and quality of the photos. If you have trouble choosing or identifying grasses from descriptions or line drawings this book will help enormously. My particular interest is the bamboos. There are photos of bamboos not often seen in this country (USA). The photos make the book a valuable addition to the books available on bamboo. But the text dealing with bamboo has many errors, surprising with an author with Roger Ground's experience. The book is published in this country by Timber Press and in the UK by David & Charles Publishers but is clearly a UK book reworked for the US market.

The Overlook Film Encyclopedia: The Gangster Film
Published in Paperback by Overlook Press (January, 2000)
Author: Phil Hardy
Average review score:

Good, though poorly organized.
At once, this book is amazing in its scope but horribly frustrating in its approach. Unlike a conventional encyclopedia, this voluminous tome orders the films within by year rather than alphabetically. This system makes the book virtually useless when trying to find a particular film at a glance. Sure, there's always the index but that fails miserably when a reader has interest in a film with a foreign title. Translated titles are available in the index, but too many foreign films have multiple titles. To make things worse the index is bereft of directors, stars, or any other means of cross-referencing a movie with which the reader might not be fully familiar. This is a flawed and ultimately ineffective work. (ISBN: 0879518812)

Another kidnapping
But this is fine, they're investigating because a friend got framed. "Poisoned Paradise" has quick paced action, and it's an okay book. Not the best but okay.
